Thinking About Lung Cancer Screening? Here’s What You Need to Know

As a pulmonary medicine physician, I often hear an important question:

“Should I get screened for lung cancer?”

I love this question because it opens the door to a conversation that can truly save lives through early detection.

What Is Lung Cancer Screening?

Lung cancer screening isn’t for everyone—but for some, it can make a tremendous difference. It’s a simple, quick, and painless test called a Low-Dose CT (LDCT) scan.

Think of it like an advanced X-ray that provides detailed images of your lungs, allowing us to spot tiny abnormalities long before symptoms appear. Detecting lung cancer early gives patients a much better chance of successful treatment and recovery.

Who Should Consider Getting Screened?

At CHI St. Alexius Health, we follow national guidelines from organizations such as the American Cancer Society and the American Lung Association. Screening is recommended for individuals who:

  • Are between 50 and 80 years old
  • Have a smoking history of at least 20 pack-years
  • Currently smoke or quit within the past 15 years
  • A “pack-year” measures how much a person has smoked over time.

For example, smoking one pack a day for 20 years equals 20 pack-years.

Two packs a day for 10 years? Also 20 pack-years.

If you fall into this group, lung cancer screening could be one of the most important health decisions you make.

What If the Scan Finds Something?

If your scan shows a spot or nodule, don’t panic—it doesn’t necessarily mean cancer. Many findings are harmless. What it does mean is that we’ll take a closer look to be sure.

At CHI St. Alexius Health, we use advanced diagnostic technology, including robotic-assisted bronchoscopy, to safely and precisely evaluate lung nodules. This minimally invasive approach allows for highly accurate biopsies with less discomfort, fewer complications, and faster recovery compared to traditional methods.

Our goal is simple: to get you clear answers quickly, using the most advanced technology available.

The Power of Prevention

While screening saves lives, the most powerful step you can take is to quit smoking. It’s never too late to stop—the benefits begin almost immediately. If you’d like help quitting, our team can connect you with personalized resources and support.

Your Next Step

If you meet these guidelines or have questions about your risk, talk to your doctor. Together, you can decide if lung cancer screening is right for you.

With early detection and the cutting-edge technology available at CHI St. Alexius Health’s Thoracic Oncology and Robotic Bronchoscopy Program, we’re here to help you breathe easier and live healthier.
